Hello, I’m Dr. Neal Schultz
[pause]
and welcome to DermTV.
Today’s question comes from Allie, the host
of the YouTube channel “Glass
Slipper Beauty”, and Allie’s question
is, why does some make-up clog pores
or cause breakouts and others don’t? Allie,
that is such an important
question and the simple answer is, any makeup
can cause clogs and
breakouts, many do not and today I’m going
to help you minimize the chances
of that happening to you. And the way I’m
going to help you is with advice
on choosing makeup, using makeup and general
skin care. First of all,
anyone who’s asking this question about
clogged pores and breakouts usually
has acne or acne prone skin, or just oily
skin, or even combination skin.
And for any and every one of those people
there is one vital rule of skin
care that they have to follow and that is:
anything they apply to their
facial skin must be labeled either water based,
oil free or non-comedogenic
and that particularly applies to makeup. With
that very one simple rule in
mind, let’s talk about liquid foundations.
Liquid foundations are a little
more apt to contain oils as are liquid makeups.
And for that reason, be
very careful if you’re using either liquid
foundation or makeup that the
labeling is proper or says water based or
oil free or non-comedogenic. And
by the way, it only has to say one of those
things; it doesn’t have to say
two or three. If you’re using the new, very
popular, mineral makeups, which
are made from powders, those powders usually
do not have any oils, they’re
very small particles, and they’re much less
apt to cause clogs. But
regardless of what you’re using, even if
you’re using the proper material
for your skin and it’s the proper constituency
of the makeup, in order to
help decrease the chance of clogs and breakouts,
make sure you’re doing the
following three things: make sure you’re
washing and toning your face at
least twice a day, make sure you take off
your makeup every night before
you go to sleep, and make sure that you exfoliate
daily. You see, even with
tiny particle powders, if you pack enough
into a pore, you’re ultimately
going to cause a clog. So, to help prevent
those clogs and to help prevent
breakouts, make sure every day you’re cleansing,
removing your makeup, and
exfoliating.
