August 17, 2011
Workers of Poland's biggest passenger rail carrier Regional Railways (PKP PR) will conduct a 24-hour general strike on August 17 as they failed to reach an agreement with the management over wage increases.
The talks of "last chance" between the trade unions' representatives and the company's board, with the participation of the infrastructure minister Cezary Grabarczyk and deputy infrastructure minister in charge of railways Andrzej Massel lasted for several hours yesterday.
The trade unions demand a 280 zlotys pay hike and structural changes within the company while the management has just offered a 120 zlotys wage increase from August and another 130 zlotys increase as of 2013.
The trade unions multiply their demands, president of PKP PR Malgorzata Kuczewska -Laska said during the talks and meeting some of them would be outside the scope of the management's competences.
The conflict between the PKP PR's management and unionists started three years ago as the company had not offered their employees any pay raises over several years.
If the action does not bring expected results, it will be repeated on August 24.
PKP PR operates some 2,700 trains and carries about 300,000 passengers a day, mainly commuters.
